Volition, Inc. and THQ, Inc. will follow-up their acclaimed join-the-revolution first-person shooters Red Faction I and II later this year with Red Faction: Guerilla.  Set 50 years after the first game, Red Faction: Guerilla will follow a miner turned rebel named Alec Mason as he journeys across a terra-formed Mars, from desolate mining posts to the labs of the capital city.  Alec will fight the EDF (Earth Defense Force), an organization that has changed greatly since the first game, as part of the newly re-established Red Faction movement for liberation.

A major change in the gameplay is that this incarnation of the game will be a third-person shooter instead of a first-person shooter.  This is to accommodate the new RED (Realtime Environment Destruction) engine featured in Red Faction: Guerilla.  A third-person point of view makes it easier for the player to see the changing environments and avoid danger.  This is especially important because the RED engine is physics based and allows for an open world that can be completely destroyed.  Players will use the open environment to fight their enemies guerilla style; utilizing improvised weapons, repurposed mining equipment, and vehicles as they are found.

Red Faction: Guerilla features an array of new, evolved weapons including: machine gun turrets, rocket turrets, grenades, a sledgehammer.  Best of all are the improvised mining tools-as-weapons called the "Grinder," which launches charged blades at enemies that can amputate people, stick in the people, or stick on objects and create a ladder to climb on.  For quick movement, there will be several possibilities.  APCs, a 6-wheel cargo truck, a walking bulldozer mech, and an assortment of jetpacks can be found.

The game will include a radio feature, allowing Alec to gain information from other characters.  There will also be a two-part HUD and GPS with goals marked on it included in the game.  One of the most useful new features will be the "backpacks."  Players will use different packs to equip themselves with unique powers ranging from jetpack to a "rhino" pack that allows them to charge through walls.

Fans of the games will be happy to hear that unlike Red Faction II, Red Faction: Guerilla will have a multiplayer component.  Several of the multiplayer modes will focus heavily on destruction-based gameplay, putting the RED engine to full effect.  Red Faction: Guerilla will be released later this year for the Xbox 360, PLAYSTATION 3, and PC.
