Before the events of Resistance 2 began to unfold, the Chimara’s menace had greatly affected the members of British Royal Marine- in particular, James Grayson. Tortured by the pain of having to kill his own brother within the horrific confines of a Chimeran conversion center, the former marine has decided to wage his own war against this alien threat, exclusively to the Sony Playstation Portable. Grayson’s task will not be an easy one, though. Taking place between the event of Resistance and Resistance 2, Resistance: Retribution will help broaden the scope of the series with a personal story and plenty of new ideas.
While details have been sparse, this portable shooter looks to be just as intense as its PS3 counterparts. Fans of the popular PS3 franchise will notice that as Retribution has switched to the PSP, it has switched its perspective as well. Making use of a third-person perspective, Retribution will featured an assisted aiming system where enemies will have to be within a certain field of the Grayson's view before they are automatically targeted. It is a wise inclusion seeing how the lack of a second analog stick on the PSP can make shooters more frustrating than fun.
Retribution will also premiere several new features in terms of connectivity. Players who own a copy of Resistance 2 will be able to play Retribution with a Dual Shock 3 controller. This cross-link feature will available to those who have their PSP's connected to their televisions via an AV output cable. While this means that the assisted aim of Retribution will be removed during gameplay, players can remap the controls and take advantage of the Dual Shock 3's added inputs. And aside from being to play through Retribution with slightly different mechanics, PSP-PS3 connectivity will also unlock an added mode of play. Known as 'Infected Mode', this alternate story line will have players controlling Grayson as a recruit of Specter Lieutenant David LaSalle of Resistance 2 fame. During this mode of play, Grayson will don the familiar Specter uniform and his eyes will glow an eerie yellow as he has been infected with a mutated form of the Chimera virus. The infection will grant Grayson with the ability to breathe underwater, allowing him to reach areas which would be otherwise inaccessible. It is an interesting addition as players will also get to see how characters in the story react to Grayson's infection and how they will even alter their behavior throughout the course of the game's events.
Players looking to challenge others will be pleased to hear that Resistance: Retribution will allow for up to 8 players to compete at once over the PSP's infrastructure. Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Containment, and Assimilation are a few of the notable modes of online play those competitive gamers can expect to challenge others to across the globe.
The Resistance franchise has gathered quite a fanbase among the gaming community. And as this action packed series is poised to make its portable debut, players can look forward to taking the action wherever they please. Anxious fans can expect a demo of this highly anticipated shooter to be available next week but for those who would rather wait for the finished product can expect Resistance: Retribution to be released during February of this year.
