Arcades, they are almost non-existent in today's society. And as consoles are now the golden standard, many arcade games are being converted to this new format. Light Gun games often fall victim to the reincarnation on today's console (like Time Crisis 4 on the Playstation 3), as well some past games from the The House of the Dead series. Well, that was in the past. Get ready for a brand new entry in the House of the Dead series with The House of the Dead: Overkill, which is exclusive for the Nintendo Wii. Think of it as a brand new concept with a brand new look that ought to pump life back into the series.
Special Agent G returns in this prequel, in his first assignment since graduating from the academy. He is sent alongside Detective Washington to find out what is causing the disappearances of the resident of a small town in Louisiana. And of course, upon arrival, they are greeted with bloodthirsty zombies who are out to make your life a living nightmare.
The first thing that you notice is the gritty style of the game; it sets out to resemble the feel of the old grindhouse films. From the beginning you will notice the negative scratches that appear on screen (this is to stay true to the grindhouse genre). This game is a prequel, so expect some 70's slang to be used to add humor. Secondly you will notice the amount of cursing, but being that it was made specifically for a console as opposed to an arcade machine, there are much less restrictions in terms of what can be put in the game.
The way that the Wii-Mote interaction is incorporated, when a zombie grabs you or gets to close to the player, you will have to follow the on-screen quick time actions which will tell you to shake or rotate the controller. There are also some other features in The House of the Dead: Overkill such as "Slow-Mofo Time" which slows everything down to allow you to become very accurate to get a perfect shot, and "Evil Eye" which allows you to blow up your surroundings as well as the zombies.
The House of the Dead: Overkill is seeming to put energy back in to the series, with its unique visual style and its gritty gameplay. Slated to release in February of 2009, this game is one to look out for. Now who is ready to kill some zombies?
