Following the destruction of the Central Tower in London, the Chimera now targets the United States. With the Chimera launching a full scale invasion on both sides of the US, protagonist Nathan Hale joins The Sentinels to help combat the destruction of the world around him. The sequel to the best selling Playstation 3 launch title, Resistance 2 has finally made its explosive way into gamers’ homes with excitement and intensity.

Resistance 2 delivers a far more enjoyable experience than its predecessor through expert pacing and a slightly easier difficulty. As a First Person Shooter, players can know what to expect as far as gameplay mechanics go. Still, Resistance 2 offers a handful of new additions to help distinguish itself from all other titles in its genre. A variety of new enemies can be found throughout this mission that will keep players on edge. Resistance 2 also includes an assortment of new weaponry while ditching some of its predecessor’s favorites. New weapons include the Marksmen, a mid-range sniper rifle that is also a semi-automatic, and a Minigun. Both weapons pack quite a punch and are highly efficient at mowing down mobs of incoming Chimera. Insomniac has also included several large scale boss battles which are a complete wonder to gaze upon. It is a testament to the Playstation 3’s graphical abilities to see such massive creatures fill the screen with great detail and flawless animation. Still, for all their splendor and graphical prowess, these menacing monsters are a bit on the simple side. Players will find that the battles aren’t all that challenging as they appear to be and that death can be the rarest of occurrences.
While the gameplay remains slightly unchanged from the standard First Person formula, the graphics have seen a great improvement. Players will find themselves in awe at the amount of detail Insomniac has put into the environments and character models. The textures are gritty as to reflect the war torn United States and the enemies are a grotesque yet breathtaking sight to behold. And as mentioned before, the boss battles are a technical wonder, plain and simple. They are a real treat for the eyes and players should stop and take notice of Insomniac’s graphical achievement.

Still, Resistance 2 is not without its shortcomings. Weapon choices aside, most notably being some of the favored arsenal of Fall of Man and the absence of the weapon wheel, Resistance 2 is a bit on the short side. Players can make their way through the single player campaign between 8-10 hours. And this fact could have been a bit damaging to its overall score but luckily, Resistance 2 offers a stellar multiplayer experience.
Resistance 2’s multiplayer experience is where players will really get there money’s worth. Players will be able to choose from Cooperative and Competitive Mode. Cooperative Mode acts as a standalone story which runs parallel with the main narrative. Up to 8 players can partake in this mission of randomized objectives while confronting hordes of Chimera and bosses in the process. Players will be able to choose from three classes: Special Ops, Soldier and Medic. They will each rely on each other for survival and as players progress through the action, their characters will level up, unlocking new abilities, weapons and equipment. Competitive Mode will offer four options to the player: Core Control, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Skirmish. And while Resistance 2 won’t win any awards for originality in this field, it is worth noting that up to 60 players can participate in a single online match at once, setting a record for the highest number of players on a map. The real accomplishment here is that all of the action is executed masterfully with hardly any lag.

Resistance 2 is available now for the Playstation 3 and owners should go out and purchase this action filled romp. It is an engaging and enjoyable experience and players will find nothing more than excellence during their time with Resistance 2. It may be a tad shorter than the original, and some of the weapon changes are not entirely agreeable but there is no denying the addictive and amazing experience which Insomniac has crafted. Players will not be disappointed. Resistance 2 is First Person shooting at its best and the multiplayer options alone will keep players entertained for endless hours.
Fun Factor: A blast to play. The unique enemies, boss encounters, and gameplay will keep you entertained for hours.
Game Length: Single Player Campaign should take roughly 8-10 hours to complete.
Difficulty: Not as challenging as Fall of Man. Newcomers and veterans alike needn't worry.
On the Negative Side: Easy boss battles and shorter game time mar an almost flawless 1st Person experience.
Bang for your Buck: Multiplayer is worth the price of admission. A must-have title for shooterfans.
