| MotorStorm Pacific Rift Preview |

To the delight of gear heads all over and with all the beauty of a flaming three-car pileup, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift will soon grace the PS3. The sequel to the highly anticipated and well received Motorstorm, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, looks to take the fun, if overall admittedly simplistic, race and crash formula from the original game and add a few wrinkles to keep fans of the original happy and bring in the newbies. The game is only a few months away (potentially) but there is not an overwhelming amount of information about the game. To the contrary, developer Evolution Studios is remaining tight lipped about the bigger innovations to its titular entry in the racing franchise. Here’s what we do know; first and foremost, this time around, racing fans can rest easy as all of the frenetic carnage will be playable online (for up to sixteen players) and via two player split screen. This is probably the biggest innovation to ‘Pacific Rift’ especially considering the very evident lack of any kind of co-op or competitive offline gameplay in the first Motorstorm. Both critics and gamers were not pleased. It seems that Evolution has learned it’s lesson however, as the team behind ‘Pacific Rift’ looks to have taken notes on fans response, and they aim to please. In addition to the long overdue split-screen play, ‘Pacific Rift’ will offer customizable soundtracks, new unlockable riders, and a novel home garage system that allows you to pre-select your favorite vehicles in every class before you get behind the checkered flag. Throw in the same crash and flash formula of the original, a few new rides (including a couple of new bikes and a big rig shaped like a buffalo), a pack of new tracks with all new shortcuts and hazards, and (one would hope) the same real-time environmental damage and you’ve got the recipe for one of this year’s top racers. There has been little word, but one can only hope that Evolution Studios can manage to balance some of the gameplay in the larger vehicles, throw in some new camera options, and improve their bare-bones formula with a few new gameplay modes besides the obligatory story mode on and offline, before big brother Sony ships its baby out. Though there is not a fully official release date, IGN.com reports that we could see Evolution Studios latest effort as early as October of 2008, though considering a tentative date so close to the holiday season, one would assume that we will see the game before next year.
