Since its very first launch back in 1989, the Prince of Persia series has been a favorite among gamers and developed quite a following. On this same note, one thing we have learned in gaming is that messing too much with a beloved franchise can send fans into a fury over screwing up the game they love. But Ubisoft says they know better and are reimagining Prince of Persia again. Fans can rest easy knowing that they aren’t making changes involving eye-liner and turning the Prince into a My Chemical Romance fan. They are returning to what Prince of Persia should be about, adventure, and they are even delving into the actual mythology of ancient Persia (now Iran), Zoroastrianism, for the plot. The adventure begins with a new Prince, a wanderer, a vagabond, in so many words, who is returning home from an adventure on a mule laden with treasure. But suddenly, he is caught in a fierce sandstorm. When the storm subsides, he finds himself in a mythical garden of beauty, dominated at its center by the massive Tree of Life. The Prince and a girl, Elika, find each other, and, in the same predicament, decide to help each other. After wandering aimlessly the couple descends upon a grand oasis. They soon reach the center of the paradise only to bear witness to the destruction of the Tree of Life, and the unleashing of Ahriman, the ancient god of darkness. Once Ahriman is released, he begins to corrupt the world, and purge the light from all corners of existence. Just then, the task of stopping the evil from spreading, and cleansing the corruption falls to the Prince and his new found ally. The game will actually revolve around banishing the darkness and returning these fouled areas to peace. We saw one segment of the Prince leaping around an environment -in true Prince of Persia fashion- that was twisted and vile. No flowers or plants grew anywhere, and the ground was a dark purplish-black color. The sky was darkened and wisps of dark magic floated around the area.As he clamored through the rocky cliff faces we were able to see how the new exploration mechanics work. It appears as though the Prince has a new handy gauntlet of steel claws. He used these to climb certain walls, and dug it into the slope of a flat cliff to slow his descent. We can only imagine what Ubisoft is still holding up their sleeves for this awesome piece of equipment. Soon the Prince found the source of the corruption. A beast, wrapped in bandages but obviously not human. As the Prince took up his sword we got to see the changes made to the combat system as well. The Prince dove into his enemy, blade slashing, but his new ally Elika, isn’t content just sitting by and watching. The combat seemed to revolve around the Prince and Elika teaming together for devastating attacks and combos. One such combo had the Prince diving into the enemy for a series of painful slashes with his sword. When he was done he launched the monster into the air, only to turn and fling the magic bearing Elika toward the airborne opponent. She quickly let out a burst of searing white energy, and grabbed the Prince’s hand and tossed him back into the air for another series of gut wrenching cuts! The beast couldn’t survive the onslaught, and died at the Prince’s hand. Soon after the evil corruptor’s demise we saw the same area the Prince had been in before, but it had changed. Without the corruption of Ahriman’s minion it became a beautiful landscape. The grass grew, the sky was a wonderful blue, and flowers were floating on the wind. The purged landscape was truly remarkable, though, it had a strange and dark beauty before as well. Ubisoft’s new visual direction gives the entire game the look of a moving painting. Like a work of art that plays out a story of ancient mythology. Prince of Persia will be different. It is a plain and simple fact that Ubisoft is reimagining the series, but I, for one, could not be more excited about this new direction. A direction focusing on the art of the game, the story, fluid combat, and most of all, that which made the game in the first place, the adventure. Share/Bookmark:
