It’s safe to say that the chainsaw gun is a weapon that’s sorely missed in most games today. Fortunately, Gears of War is not one of those games, and has left gamers around the world clambering for the inevitable sequel, which hopes to include all of the original game’s assets and more. Developed once again by designer Cliff Bleszinski (famously known by his message board tag name CliffyB) and Epic Games, Gears of War 2 (Xbox360) continues the previous game’s story, complete with deeper characters, richer gameplay, and prettier graphics, based on an improved version of the Unreal Engine.

Six months after the end of the last game, in which Lightmass Bombs were detonated in order to annihilate the alien Locust horde, protagonist Marcus Fenix is called once again to stop the creatures, along with fellow COG (Coalition of Ordered Government) soldiers Dominic Santiago, Augustus Cole, and Damon Baird. This time, the Locusts have all but wiped out the human population, and it falls to the COG to protect the Jacinto Plateau, one of mankind’s only surviving bases. Using drilling derricks, Fenix and his crew, including new pilot Dizzy, can drill into Locust territory and take them out fast and efficiently. Locusts, however, have gotten smarter; the aliens will surround Fenix and his marines, attack by surprise from cover positions, and flee when they know they are outnumbered.

To counter this, players have their own array of technology. Some new weapons include the Medusa, a rapid-firing pistol, and the Scorcher flamethrower, which will deliver a barrage of fiery death onto any aliens unfortunate enough to fall in its range. Grenades can now be attached to floors and walls and triggered to detonate at the player’s discretion, and weapons like the Lancer have been given increased capabilities. Players can crawl faster, punch, and find all sorts of new creative ways to cover while shooting away at the Locust swarms.

One gameplay trailer shows Fenix charging into alien territory, flanked by helicopters and giant tanks. He shoots at his enemies, covers behind a barrier, picks up an enemy’s dead body and uses it as a meat shield, and then engages in one-on-one chainsaw gun combat with a Locust in what seems to be a sequence of brand new chainsaw moves. If this is any indication of how the game will play out, we can expect an action-packed and exciting Gears of War 2 this November.
