Castlevania Judgment Preview

Castlevania Judgment PreviewWith Vampire Killer in hand, the heroic Simon Belmont must once again slay the cursed denizens of the night.  And though our hero’s journey will cross paths with the likes of Death and Count Dracula, this isn’t the adventure the Belmont Family has grown accustom to throughout the years.  Set for an exclusive release on the Nintendo Wii later this year, Castlevania Judgment will span the series history and bring its characters together in a 3D fighting arena.

“We wanted to take this addition to the signature Konami franchise in a direction that really sets it apart from the previous Castlevania titles in the series," says Anthony Crouts, Vice President of Marketing for Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.  From humble 8-bit beginnings, Castlevania has always been synonymous with the action and adventure.  And while the idea of a fighting game might raise a few eyebrows, Konami has 22 years worth of characters and mythology to help make this spin off title a satisfying one.

Castlevania Judgment PreviewAs it stands, confirmed characters include: Simon Belmont, Dracula, Alucard, Maria, Death and Shanoa.   At first glance, players will notice the dramatic changes in character appearances.  With designs from Death Note artist, Takeshi Obata, many familiar faces have undergone a complete fashion makeover.  And while vampire hunter Simon Belmont retains some semblance of his classic self, characters such as Alucard and Maria Renard are barely recognizable.

Gameplay has been kept simple thanks to the controls of the Nintendo Wii.  As all movements have been mapped to the Nunchuck, players will swing the Wiimote to perform basic attacks and holding down the B button while swinging will result in heavier attacks.  Classic sub-weapons such as the boomerang and holy water will also make a return and in traditional Castlevania fashion, players must gather hearts in order to make use of them.

Thankfully, the action won’t be restricted to players home. Konami has stated that Judgment will be a multiplayer affair using the Wii’s wi-fi capabilities.  There will also be a connectivity function between Judgment and Order of Ecclesia, Konami’s latest Castlevania adventure for the Nintendo DS, which will allow for bonus content to be unlocked in each game.

Castlevania Judgment PreviewIt is definitely a bold move on Konami’s part.  But Lead Designer Koji Igarashi promises that the experience will be something to look forward to. “It's a fighter, but it's been developed as a 3D action game -- It's an extension of an action game. I have dedicated myself to create a super exciting action game based around the simple controls of the Wii, and I feel it's coming along very nicely.”
