Patapon 2 PreviewIn the night, an evil force advances towards your humble tribe.  And though the dust has barely settled on your war drums, and your one-eyed troops weary from their previous battle, the very livelihood of your loyal race hangs in the balance.  What is a God to do? Be prepared to beat the drum once more as Patapon 2 will be marching its way to the Sony PSP later this year.

Those familiar to the series will notice that gameplay has not changed.  Patapon 2 still retains the rhythm and beat mechanics of using specific button combinations to command your troops in battle.  Designer Hiroyuki Kotani has instead opted to present the player with an unbelievable amount of content and extras for this highly anticipated sequel.  "There are lots more bosses and midboss-type enemies this time. We've got about double the amount of content to explore, just in terms of the number of stages alone. Add the customization options to that, and to be honest, you may never get to fully explore every bit of it."

In addition to the single player extras, Sony has unexpectedly announced an ad hoc multiplayer mode for Patapon 2.  During Story Mode, players will come across giant eggs scattered among the level maps. Though some eggs contain useful items, others will contain even smaller eggs.  And this is where Patapon 2 gets creative.  Smaller eggs cannot simply be broken; they must be hatched.  And in order to do that, players must participate in multiplayer.  Your army will hoist the small egg above their heads and march as they defend themselves from advancing monsters.  Once players arrive at the end of the map, they will be greeted by an egg hatching altar of sorts.  And in adorable Patapon fashion, all four players will perform a ceremony of timed button presses in order to crack open the egg.

Patapon 2 PreviewIt's hard to imagine Patapon frantic on-screen action as anything other than a single player adventure but Sony has incorporated a Hero Patapon to help keep confusion to a minimum.  Hero Patapons act a focal point for players to know where their troops are. In addition to the standard customization options, Hero Patapons can be further customized with items found only in multiplayer.

Patapon’s simple look and addictive gameplay lent a lot to its initial success.  And it’s no surprise that the series would continue its trend of imagination and innovation on Sony’s handheld.  Patapon 2 will be hitting Japanese shores this winter with a North American release close behind.  Sony has taken everything which was great about the first game and made it even better. And with all the added contend and the inclusion of an ad hoc multiplayer, Patapon looks to charm gamers for a second time.
