Guitar Hero 5 song import feature explained

Activision has spilled the beans on Guitar Hero 5's song 'import' feature.  While plastic guitar playing enthusiasts first likened the process to Rockband 2's ability to rip songs from the original title's disc, it seems that GH5 won't require any previous software to import old tracks.

"Within the Guitar Hero 5 song import menu, gamers will key in their unique ID from the manual of the previous game, pay a small re-licensing fee and then be given access to download the available songs (like DLC) in a big batch. This is done to bring these songs up to date with enhanced Guitar Hero 5 features like band moments, expert+ drumming (new for World Tour songs) and the new vocal star power. The game reacts to these songs as though they were DLC and are available in the same play modes."

Sounds like a good idea but it does come with a warning label.  Though you are able to re-download the tracks as many times as you want after the first time, the unique ID from the maual can only be redeemed once.  So be wary when you are trolling those used bins for copies of Guitar Hero escapades of old; that ID may have already been used up.
