Back when I was a young sprout, long before the advent of the internet and multiplayer modes begat games with throw-away single player campaigns, you played classic games for one reason: to see the ending. Whether it was the simple victory screen of an 8-bit shooter such as Gradius or Contra, or the 16 bit operatic drama of an SNES RPG’s finale like that of Final Fantasy II or Chrono Trigger, the big question on the playground was “have you seen the ending?” A powerful ending can positively influence one’s impression of a game as a whole like a lingering hug when saying goodbye. Conversely, some phenomenal games should have ended on a high note long before they fizzled out a few hours later like the guest who won’t go home after the party ends (BioShock). So, without further ado, here are the top 10 endings that struck a chord with Games Abyss.
Needless to say, spoilers for both classic and modern games follow.
